What is whiplash?

Whiplash is a term used to describe the symptoms which occur after the neck swings forward and backward suddenly and very fast. This very fast movement is usually called a sudden acceleration-deceleration force. The symptoms usually affect muscles, joints, ligaments, bones, nerves and discs in the neck and upper body regions.

 

Causes of Whiplash

Whiplash is most commonly caused by motor vehicle accident. Other activities which may cause whiplash are instances where there is sudden acceleration-deceleration forces such as sporte related collision or roller-coasters.

What are the symptoms of whiplash?

Symptoms may vary widely and can occur either immediately or after a few days . Some common symptoms are

  • Gait disturbances

  • Difficulty speaking or swallowing
